Feng Shui and Logo Colors

The study of Feng Shui can tell us a great deal about the science behind color usage in logos, which provides for a far richer, deeper, and more powerful visual experience in corporate branding. Careful selections of colors for a business logo can have a huge impact on how a brand or business is perceived. The colors used in a logo can also affect further down the line as to how well that brand performs in the competitive market.

History of Feng Shui

The ancient Chinese practice of Feng Shui is the study of how energy and energy flows interact with a given space. Through this practice, the Chinese aimed to bring harmony and balance between the energy of a given space and its inhabitants. This same energy, or qi, found in the physical world can also be found in colors and shapes. In the same way colors are believed to affect our moods, they can also be used to evoke different emotions and feelings.

The Color Wheel

The Color Wheel is a universal foundation for understanding color combinations in all aspects of design, including logos. This visual tool diagrammatically shows the relationship between colors and how they interact with one another. According to the Color Wheel there are five colors at the core of the spectrum. The primary colors of red, yellow, and blue cannot be created from mixing any other colors together. From here, the secondary colors of orange, green, and purple can be created by mixing the primary colors together. Additionally, tertiary colors are created by mixing a primary and a secondary color together.

Using the Color Wheel for Logo Design

By understanding the Color Wheel, designers can create powerful and meaningful logos that evoke the right emotions and feelings. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when using the Color Wheel to create an effective logo:

  • Choose colors wisely: Select colors based on the message you want to convey. For example, red can be used to evoke a sense of energy and vibrancy while blue can evoke feelings of peace and tranquility.
  • Create a balance of colors: Carefully considering the harmony of colors when developing a logo is key for creating an aesthetically pleasing logo. Combining colors from opposite sides of the Color Wheel often produces the most visually-appealing results.
  • Use color gradients: To add depth and complexity to a logo, designers can use color gradients by adding different shades of the same base color.
